In 1881,
King David Kalakaua was the first state leader to meet with Emperor Meiji after the opening of Japan. The two heads of state saw the importance of building global relationships and the value of cultural exchanges. Kalakaua requested and Meiji signed an agreement in 1885 allowing the
immigration of Japanese workers to Hawai'i. therefore Hokule'a had chosen Yokohama as the final destination of this voyage.

Hokule'a departed the Big Island in January. Then she sailed through Micronesia and now in Nippon Archipelago. Stops in Japan are Itoman of Okinawa, Uto of Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Fukuoka, Suo-Oshima of Yamaguchi, Hiroshima, Uwajima and Yokohama. Okinawa, Kumamoto, Fukuoka, Yamaguchi and Hiroshima had sent a considerable number of emigrants to Hawai'i. Stops at Nagasaki and Hiroshima are for the memorial of the tragedy of the Atomic Bombs. In Uwajima, Hokule'a will make a memorial ceremony for Ehime-maru, the training ship tragically sunk in the offshore of Honolulu. The final destination is Yokohama, where King Kalakaua had visited in 1881 to start the cultural exchange between Japan and Hawai'i.
